During the World War II, the use of a challenge coin was realized. During this period, one incident spoke millions. An injured American army official was captured by the German army. They suspected that the official was part of a spy. By good luck, he had the custom challenge coin which was recognized by the German officials. They realized that he was not a spy and so he was not killed or captured. The soldier was in a very bad place since he had lost all forms of identification which is currently unacceptable.
